Carnegie Mellon Tepper School of Business is conisdered to have one of top ranked MBA programs in the world. Tepper ESSAY QUESTIONS

There are two questions to help us get to know you better. In addition, we offer an optional essay if there is additional information you wish to share about your candidacy.

Essay 1 (Maximum 300 words)

Describe a defining moment in your life. How has it shaped you professionally?

Essay 2 (Maximum 300 words)

Based on your research and interactions, describe how your strengths contribute to the Tepper School community. How will you benefit from being a member of the Tepper School MBA program?

RECOMMENDATION QUESTIONS

Your recommender will be asked to respond based on his/her experience working with you:

  1. If you were to coach this candidate with respect to how s/he works within a team, what would you advise that s/he does well? What would you advise the candidate to do differently?Provide specific examples that support your advice.
  2. If you were to coach this candidate on his/her professional development, in what areas would you suggest s/he focus? What are the areas of strength on which s/he can build?Provide specific examples that support your advice.

Essay 1 (Maximum 500 words): What transferrable skills have you developed that are related to your professional goals outlined in Short Answer 1? Additionally, identify the skills that you will need to develop or enhance. Specifically, how will the Tepper MBA help you develop these skills?

There are four required essays for candidates to the Tepper MBA program.

Essay E (Optional): Is there anything else that you think we should know as we evaluate your application? CMU Tepper Essay Analysis 2011-12

MBA Essay 1. What are your short-term and long-term goals? How will a Tepper MBA help you to achieve these goals? We recommend that you give this question a good amount of thought. Your goals must be specific in terms of the role, industry and geographical span of control. Attempt to first summarize your long and short term goals in a sentence each before getting down to writing this essay. Once you have crystallized on your long and short term goals we suggest you approach the essay as follows:
- Define your short term and long term goals.
- Define your current skill-sets , experience and gaps that you think Tepper will help you bridge.
- Detail which courses and programs are you looking forward to attend in Tepper and how they will help you build the skills you lack
- Finally, please mention the steps you took to learn about Tepper.


MBA Essay 2. The Tepper School is looking for individuals who will make an impact. Give an example of a time where you made an impact in your professional or academic life. (Suggested length - 2 double-spaced pages.)

This essay gives you an opportunity to show case a situation where you created a positive (ideally quantifiable) impact. You may choose a situation from either professional or academic life but before you finalize on the situation, convince yourself that it is significant. One of the ways to identify a significant situation/ experience is to analyze the challenges you faced and the means you used to overcome the challenges. Further more it is important to highlight how the experience/ situation has influenced how you approach life's challenges/ situations. Keep in mind that your experience is an opportunity for you to project your uniqueness.

Once you have detailed the experience, the challenges and the learning, please highlight how the experience/ situation has equipped you to better contribute to life at Tepper.

MBA Essay 3. Please answer one of the following two questions. Please clearly specify which question you are answering. (Suggested length - 1 double-spaced page.)

1. Describe an obstacle you have faced in your professional or academic life. How did you overcome this obstacle and how did it foster your development?
2. Describe a time in your professional or academic life in which your ethics were challenged. How did you deal with the situation and what did you learn from it?

Option1:
This essay gives you an opportunity to present your ability to "win against all odds", your adaptability and leadership skills. Begin your essay by summarizing the challenge and the results you achieved in a sentence or two. Once you have done this then detail:
1) the situation
2) the challenges
3) how you overcame the challenges
4) the results you achieved
5) what you learned from the situation

Option2:
This essay is to help analyze your judgment and maturity. Begin by explain the ethical situation. Next describe the alternatives available and how you analyzed which alternative to choose.
Mention the short and long term consequences of your decision and therefore what you have learned from it.

MBA Essay 4. Please answer one of the following two questions. Please clearly specify which question you are answering. (Suggested length - 1 double-spaced page.)

Option 1:
This essay is a chance for you to highlight an aspect of your personality which has not been mentioned in any other part of your application. While answering this question, please be sure to mention why the information you are giving is important to the admissions committee and how you will add value to the Tepper class.

Option 2:
Answer this question by summarizing your personal achievement first. While you could choose an achievement for which you received formal appreciation (eg: a certificate/ citation etc.), you could also choose an achievement which created an impact in your life (and for which you did not receive format recognition). For example running the marathon could be considered a significant achievement if you can sufficiently describe the significant personal challenges you faced and how you overcame them. Your learning from the experience could also be used to differentiate yourself.

CMU Tepper MBA Essay for 2010

MBA Essay 1 * Required (Suggested length - 2 double spaced pages per essay)

What are your short term and long term goals? How will a Tepper MBA help you achieve these goals? (Please include any information regarding what steps you have taken to learn more about Tepper.

We would first suggest you to be sure of your goals then learn about Tepper and then finally align your goals with Tepper programs and courses. You may structure your answer as below:

  • Define your short term and long term goals.
  • Define your current skill-sets , experience and gaps that you think Tepper will help you bridge.
  • Specifically describe which courses and programs are you looking forward to attend, in Tepper.

Finally, as stated in the question, please mention the steps you took to learn about Tepper.

MBA Essay 2 * Required (Suggested length - 2 double spaced pages per essay)

The Tepper School€™s culture relies on all members to be active contributors to our community. With your values, experiences, and interests, how will you make a unique contribution to the Tepper community? Your examples may include: classroom interaction, student activities, career development, community service, etc.

This is an important essay and requires you to creatively talk about your experience, skills and qualities and how can you add value to Tepper school. Think of 2-3 strengths of yours based on the following points:

  • Your professional experience. For instance, what knowledge you gained working in your respective domain such as Telecom / Finance / manufacturing and then how will that knowledge be unique and important to your peers at Tepper.
  • Your passion and hobby outside work. For instance , if you have worked with NGOs then how can you make ventures and corporates socially more responsible.
  • Anything else that differentiates you from others. For instance, if you have great people skill and can organize events then you can mention how you can contribute as an event organizer and team builder at Tepper.

MBA Essay 3 * Required

Please answer two of the following three questions or statements. Please clearly specify which questions you are answering. Your two answers should equal a total of two pages or less.

  1. Describe an obstacle you have faced in your professional or academic life. How did you overcome this obstacle and how did it foster your development?
  2. Describe a time in which your ethics were challenged. How did you deal with the situation and what did you learn from it?
  3. One thing people would be surprised to know about me is.

Option1: This essay is to help judge your perseverance, flexibility and adaptability. We would suggest you to follow the following structure:

  • Start with briefing about the situation, goal of your project and your role in the same.
  • Explain the challenges you faced and how you overcame them.
  • Explain your decision and their outcome.
  • And finally explain your learnings and processes / ideas you have implemented to avert similar situations.

Option2: This essay is to help analyze your judgment in face of adversity. Hence you may write it in the following way:

  • Explain the situation and the challenge.
  • Clearly explain your options and why the ethical alternative was the difficult one.
  • What did you do to overcome the challenge and what was the result.
  • Finally explain your learnings.

Option3: This is an open ended question and you can use it to highlight and explain a strength of yours that you have not been able to mention before. Try to align your strength with what Tepper looks for in candidates.

MBA Essay 4
