Essay for Class of 2013-14 application Cycle:

Essay: Share your thought process as you encountered a challenging work situation or complex problem. What did you learn about yourself?(500 words maximum)

Essay for Class of 2012-13 application Cycle:

Essay 1:
Share your thought process as you encountered a challenging work situation or complex problem. How did this experience change your perspective? (500 words maximum)

The Key thing to keep in mind for this essay is that this essay should be about how you deal with a challenge rather than the challenge itself. Darden would like to see how you approach a situation and how willing you are to learn from your mistakes.

First of all, detail out the challenging situation you faced in a couple of sentences and set the context. Then detail out what action did you take to overcome this obstacle and how did you go about doing it. Be honest here and detail out how you arrived at the solution for the challenge. What were the steps you did, who/ what were the factors of consideration and how did you arrive at these steps? How did you interact with your team and senior managers during the challenge and how much of guidance did you seek from them? It is important to show that you are not a loner and you consider others in the team when dealing with a challenge.

It is not necessary that you successfully overcame this challenge; the main thing is what you learned about yourself and about your working style that has been affected by this incident. This has to be a significant challenge that changed your outlook towards the way you or your team works. Again, the incident can be a small one, but the impact it made has to be substantial. Put together the lessons you learnt and the actions you have taken to overcome the challenge (or similar challenge in future) along with the story. This is very important as it shows you are willing to learn and manage challenges
Overall, the essay is 500 words so it gives plenty of space to detail out your thought process and the subsequent actions taken to overcome the challenge. Finish off with the key learning you got from this instance and you will be good to go.

Apart from the above Essay question, two more questions are present in the application. These questions are as below :
