NUS, likes to take up this uncommon (and rather indirect) route to understanding an applicant's profile, one of which is testing the general awareness and applicant's stand on a common phenomenon. The topic presented above seems to be another one in that trend.
To be able to address this question, it's important that we break it up into smaller parts and analyze the components from all possible angles. In this particular case, management has already decided that production activities will be moved offshore to save costs, hence evaluating / challenging that decision would be erroneous and out of scope of the question.
The questions that remain to be addressed are how this strategy would be implemented and what are the possible options within the given scope of management decision. If you are an applicant from IT / services industry then you have probably seen the implementation of outsourcing / offshoring model. If you have any exposure to outsourcing / offshoring strategy then this should be a cakewalk. Scale of the initiative: Can the production processes be scaled to such a level so that parent company maintains a good hold on the core competencies in foreseeable future? The capability to ramp-up / ramp-down the scale of initiative within a stipulated time has to be evaluated as well.
Criticality of the processes being offshored / outsourced: As the process of outsourcing / offshoring starts with non-critical processes and evolves continuously, it is mandatory for the applicant to evaluate the criticality of the processes.
In essence, the NUS essay should present your general awareness about outsourcing destinations and ability to utilize those facts in a real life scenario. This is a very common question asked by B-Schools and applicants usually talk about non-existent stories told in such a dramatic manner that draws out laughter among the evaluation committee members. As for an applicant, It is not necessary to go over the board to explain how someone's mistake could have cost you your job and how you managed to convince your boss with your capabilities and past work experience. It is however, necessary to highlight the situation and its possible impact on your surrounding environment / colleagues / department.
It's nice if the situation is from a real life experience. Statistically, not all experiences are hair raising tales, so one doesn't need to be dramatic about real-life experience to make the evaluator realize the gravity of situation. The situation could be outside profession and in some other environment (again, doesn't have to be from nether world for the sake of exaggeration). A situation could be simple yet be difficult. E.g. babysitting your friend's cousin while there are relatives who decide to surprise your parents with their sudden visit can be a difficult situation to manage. What matters here is thinking through the situation and presenting it properly to the essay evaluator.
Through this NUS essay topic, the evaluator is looking for some important traits within your personality. Within the corporate world, managers are usually inundated with difficult situations where quick decisions have to be made. In some way, this essay helps the b-school admissions committee pick up the right candidate who can be trained for such challenges. E.g. if the applicant is a risk-taker in one essay then it would be a folly to present a situation where his / her profile is presented as risk averse in this essay.
Although alignment with the overall profile is necessary and important, the candidate should not forget the word limit and that the scope of essay is limited only to one situation. Most of the immature profiles would go overboard in exaggeration, but a mature essay would lay down the facts to the point.
